 What is Topsoil?

Topsoil is the top soil layer of the earth that goes from 2 to 8 inches deep.

This layer of soil mixes minerals and nutrients together to create a combination that all living plants, tress and shrubs require. Plants typically have their roots in this material and obtain most of their nutrients from here.

Topsoil is typically clean and healthy soil that has been screened extensively to remove any rocks, sticks, stones and other items.

Screened Topsoil in NJ & NY

Many suppliers will claim that they have the best “screened” topsoil available. Unfortunately many of them are misleading in their description of the product. There are a few things you can do to ensure you’re getting high quality screened toposoil.

  • Inspect the stockpile – It should be free of trash, debris and rock fragments greater than 3 inches in diameter.
  • Check the texture – Soil texture will impact the suitability of the topsoil.
  • Ask about organic matter – Good topsoils will contain between 2% and 10% organic matter. This will impact how much water and nutrients the topsoil can hold.

When buying toposil the go-to rule is that the darker it is, the better. Just be careful that topsoil doesn’t appear too dark as it may contain too much organic matter. Too much organic matter can make the topsoil more easily compactable during installation and in the future.

Topsoil Types and Uses

Topsoil can help provide a great base layer to grow a number of different plants and trees. We’ve seen it commonly used in gardens, planting beds, athletic fields, golf courses and for grass seeding.

There are technically many different types of topsoil available, however they are all encompassed into three main categories.

  • Sandy Topsoil – This form of topsoil typically has more sand than normal. It is very popular for use with plants or vegetables that require a lot of drainage.
  • Loamy Topsoil – This form of topsoil is typically equal in the amount of clay, sand and silt it contains. This is the most prominent topsoil that people use and see. It is a great starter topsoil and can be used for lawns, gardens, plants and many other things.
  • Clay Topsoil – This form of topsoil contains more clay than normal and is known for its ability to retain moisture. It is ideal for areas that do not see frequent rainfall or are prevalent to droughts.

How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

When trying to determine how much topsoil you need we recommend speaking with a local expert. They’ll be able to fully understand the breadth of your project and what it entails. Braen Supply specialists are available to discuss your project and topsoil needs whenever you’re available.
